311 Summer Street
Urban Preservation

Overview
The renovation of the warehouse building at 311 Summer Street was part of a neighborhood redevelopment initiative in south Boston. Local preservation codes made window replacement challenging.
Rapid prototyping was used to develop extruded aluminum panning that precisely replicated the profile of the existing frame. This allowed for installation of a sash that had the same amount of glass as previous windows, meeting historic preservation requirements. Project Highlights
- The Marvin Signature team engineered a unique two-piece panning system for three-wide units that had arched infill panels on the exterior, while retaining their original rectangular shape on the interior.
- The system allowed for frame replacement without tear-out.
- The flexible and responsive Marvin Signature team was able to adjust the delivery timing of the windows to best fit the rigid timeline of the project.
- 311 Summer Street has applied for LEED Platinum Certification.
