American Brewery

Overview
The American Brewery in East Baltimore was abandoned for 30 years before Maryland
social services agency Humanim determined to transform the building into a neighborhood
center. Meticulous research went into making sure that replacement windows would
be as close to the originals as possible. Every window had to be measured to accommodate
the shifting of the 120+ year-old building.
On-time delivery was critical in order to meet grant and tax incentives that funded
the extensive $21.2 million neighborhood revitalization centerpiece.
Project Highlights
-
Original openings ranged from salvageable oversized double-hung
windows, deteriorated sash in intact framing, and openings that needed
complete replacement units.
- Many openings had been bricked in or plywooded over. Two remaining
partial windows and historic photos were used for reference.
- More energy efficient than the original windows, all new units were made
with insulating glass with simulated divided lites.
-
Impact glass was used in first floor windows to boost security.
